The future of skin renewal is here.

The Science of Plasma

At North Skin, we specialise in two of the world’s most advanced plasma technologies: Plasma Fibroblast (PlasmaPen) and Fusion 8 Plasma.

Plasma Fibroblast is designed for precision skin tightening and collagen stimulation, while Fusion 8 delivers multi-modal plasma energy for rejuvenation, repair and healing across a wider range of concerns. Together, they allow us to tailor results to every skin type and condition – from tightening and resurfacing to calming inflammation and restoring balance.

What is Plasma

Plasma is often referred to as the fourth state of matter, sitting between solid, liquid and gas. When energy is applied to a gas, its particles become charged (ionised) and transform into plasma, creating a visible arc of light and energy.

In skin therapy, this plasma energy interacts with the surface of the skin to create precise, controlled micro-injuries that activate fibroblast cells. These cells are responsible for producing new collagen and elastin, the structural proteins that keep skin firm, smooth and supported.

At the same time, plasma sterilises and oxygenates the skin, neutralising bacteria and supporting the body’s natural healing response. The result is a deeply restorative process that strengthens the skin barrier while renewing tone, texture and elasticity.

The plasma energy helps to

Activate the body’s natural wound-healing response

Stimulate new collagen formation

Support healthier, more youthful skin

Reduce inflammation and promote balanced repair

Unlike light or heat-based systems, plasma can both resurface and heal in a single process — rebuilding the skin’s integrity from within.

Plasma Fibroblast (PlasmaPen)

Plasma Pen treatment, also known as Plasma Fibroblast Therapy, is a non-invasive, non-surgical procedure that tightens, resurfaces and rejuvenates the skin using targeted plasma energy.

This energy creates a controlled reaction on the skin’s surface that activates the body’s natural wound-healing response. As new fibroblast cells are stimulated, they begin to rebuild collagen and elastin ~ restoring firmness, improving texture and reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

The process helps:
• Activate the body’s natural wound-healing and regeneration response
• Stimulate new collagen formation for smoother, more lifted skin
• Support healthier, more youthful skin structure
• Minimise visible signs of ageing such as wrinkles and skin laxity
• Reduce inflammation and improve skin clarity over time

Our Technology

The result is natural skin rejuvenation without surgery or injectables, firmer, smoother, more refined skin that continues to improve as collagen develops over the following months.

Plasma Q&A

Plasma energy creates a controlled reaction on the surface of the skin that stimulates fibroblast cells in the deeper layers. These cells are responsible for producing new collagen and elastin. As the skin heals, it becomes tighter, smoother and more resilient over time.

Plasma Fibroblast (PlasmaPen) is a high-intensity treatment that creates a small, visible carbon crust on the surface of the skin. It’s ideal for tightening and lifting in targeted areas like eyelids, lips and deeper lines.

Fusion 8 Plasma combines multiple plasma modalities including Warm Argon Plasma, Hyper Plasma and Cold Atmospheric Plasma (CAP). This allows us to treat everything from ageing and pigmentation to acne, inflammation and scarring. The Argon-based tips (warm and hyper plasma) create deeper stimulation and tightening, while the cold plasma modes focus on healing, sterilisation and barrier repair.

All plasma treatments involve some level of sensation, depending on the device and area being treated.

For Plasma Fibroblast and Warm Argon Plasma, a topical numbing cream is applied to keep you comfortable. You may feel heat, mild stinging or a quick pinprick sensation as the plasma energy interacts with the skin.

Cold Plasma (Ozone) treatments feel lighter – more like warmth or gentle static energy on the surface.

After Plasma Fibroblast or Warm Argon Plasma, you may notice small carbon dots or mild swelling for a few days as the skin begins to heal. This is part of the natural regeneration process.

After Cold/Ozone Plasma, you might experience a light flush or mild warmth that settles within a few hours. These treatments have little to no visible downtime.

Plasma Fibroblast and Warm Argon Plasma deliver visible tightening and lift as soon as the surface has healed, with collagen continuing to build for up to 12 weeks.

Cold Plasma gives an instant glow and smoother texture, with results that build cumulatively over a series of treatments.

Results from Plasma Fibroblast (PlasmaPen) and Warm Argon Plasma can last several years with healthy skincare and sun protection. These treatments stimulate true collagen renewal rather than a temporary plumping effect.

Cold Plasma results are maintained through regular treatments and good at-home care, helping to keep the skin strong, clear and balanced.

Plasma can be customised for almost every skin type and concern.

Fusion 8 allows for gentler treatments suitable for reactive or inflamed skin, while Plasma Fibroblast is best suited for those seeking stronger tightening and resurfacing results. Your practitioner will guide you on the right modality during your consultation.

Your safety always comes first. Plasma treatments are not suitable for everyone, and certain health conditions, medications, or recent procedures may prevent or delay treatment. Your practitioner will always conduct a full consultation and medical screening prior to treatment.

You may not be suitable for plasma treatments if you:
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding (treatment can only be performed once hormones have stabilised post-nursing)
• Have had cancer within the past five years, are currently undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy, or have an active cancer diagnosis
• Have a pacemaker or other electronic implant, or any metal plates or pins in the treatment area
• Have used Roaccutane, Accutane or other steroid-based acne medication in the past six months
• Are taking anticoagulant or blood-thinning medication (such as Warfarin, Xarelto, Eliquis or similar)
• Have autoimmune or connective tissue disorders such as Lupus, Scleroderma or Haemophilia
• Have uncontrolled diabetes, bleeding disorders, or conditions that impair wound healing
• Have Hepatitis C, HIV/AIDS, or any blood-borne illness
• Have epilepsy and have experienced a seizure within the past two years
• Have heart conditions, including high blood pressure, mitral valve prolapse, or are on medication that increases bleeding or bruising risk
• Have recently had Botox, dermal fillers, or surgical procedures in the treatment area (wait at least 3 months after surgery or 21 days after injectables)
• Have retinal detachment, blepharoplasty, or recent eye surgery within the past 3 months
• Have active skin infections, cold sores, acne flare-ups, eczema, rosacea, dermatitis, psoriasis, or open wounds in the treatment area
• Have a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring
• Have severe pigmentation disorders or very dark skin tones (Fitzpatrick V–VI), due to risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
• Have had an organ transplant or are on immunosuppressive medication
• Are using strong topical retinoids or other active resurfacing treatments
• Have recently experienced a viral or bacterial infection, shingles, or herpes simplex (you must wait at least six weeks after recovery)
• Are under the influence of alcohol or recreational drugs at the time of treatment

In some cases, treatment may be possible with written medical clearance from your doctor — particularly for clients with stable health conditions or past surgeries.

The Science Explained

When plasma energy meets the skin’s surface, it instantly ionises the air between the probe and the skin, creating a tiny electrical arc. This arc converts energy into heat within the epidermis and dermis, triggering a micro-injury that activates fibroblast cells. These cells begin producing new collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid which are the building blocks of firm, smooth, hydrated skin!

Fibroblasts are the skin’s natural “builders.” They create structural proteins that keep the skin lifted and elastic. As we age, fibroblast activity slows down. Plasma re-awakens these cells through a controlled wound-healing response, encouraging them to rebuild stronger, denser collagen fibres.

Argon is a noble gas that amplifies the plasma energy while keeping it stable and precise. It allows deeper penetration with less surface trauma, making it ideal for tightening, resurfacing and improving tone. It also helps deliver a sterile, oxygen-rich environment that supports faster healing and reduced inflammation.

Cold Plasma creates reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) — beneficial charged particles that destroy harmful bacteria and support skin regeneration. These molecules help balance the skin’s microbiome, calm inflammation and strengthen the epidermal barrier, making it particularly effective for acne, rosacea and post-treatment recovery.

Plasma temporarily disrupts the bonds between skin cells (desmosomes), increasing permeability by up to 24% within the first 12 hours after treatment. This allows advanced serums and exosomes to penetrate deeper, enhancing their effect and supporting faster repair.

This varies depending on your specific treatment, however usually within hours, the body’s repair cascade begins.

Day 1–3: Inflammation triggers fibroblast activation.
Week 1–3: Collagen fibres begin forming as the skin remodels.
Week 4–12: New collagen matures and cross-links, tightening the skin and improving texture.

Visible rejuvenation continues as this process unfolds beneath the surface.

Unlike lasers or radiofrequency, plasma energy can target both the epidermis and dermis without relying on light absorption or bulk heat. This makes it suitable for a wider range of skin tones and concerns, with less risk of damage to surrounding tissue. It’s a precise, biologically intelligent form of energy that stimulates regeneration rather than simply wounding the skin.
